In the Name of Charity
Manchester City Community: In the Name of Charity
As far as charity events and playing an active participation in our community, Manchester City’s efforts to help forge a strong relationship with our surrounding community is one of the strongest in the Premier League. The many charities that we also advocate is an extensive list and the projects aren’t just limited to Manchester either; focusing on initiatives in Kula Lumpur; to New York; to Cape Town – the reach is vast.
But some of the more social events that we hold could be improved, that could potentially involve some of City’s leading lights to help raise awareness for some of the charities that are of lesser current standing but are in great need of more funding.
You only have to look at our bitter rival, Manchester United to see how successful their Road to Old Trafford poker tournament has been over the years. The event welcomes some of the current professional players, ex-stars and some seasoned poker professional to help raise money for a host of charities with the winner donating their winnings to a charity of their choice.
Imagine a City charity poker event with the likes of Shaun Goater, Georgi Kinkladze, the now ex-Wigan boss Uwe Rosler, Steve Howie and a host of former players. And who wouldn’t welcome back the enigmatic Mario Balotelli to play at such an event in aid of a good cause, or two? It could be a really interesting event for City to put on in order to raise the profile of a host of local charities.
Many charities and clubs are now using poker as a great way to get media coverage with a wide range of professional athletes using the sport as a platform for exposure such as cricketer Shane Warne, golfer Tiger Woods and his annual Tiger Jam events and also Allan Houston of New York Knicks fame. They chose casino gaming due to its meteoric rise in popularity over the last 20 years when the online side of gaming drew in a whole new crowd through the advent of the first ever-online wagering portal InterCasino. Since then the industry has been grown exponentially with many charities tapping into the sector’s popularity to help raise the profile of their worthy cause/s.
Now City could utilise the likes of captain Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta and James Milner to help raise awareness through a charity event such as this. Like in the way City legends recently turned out in support of the Linzi Ashton Charity Football Match but this time with the main theme being poker as opposed to football. And who knows, if the dates line up, they could even potentially invite Fernando and Fernandinho’s international teammate Neymar to the event. The Brazilian ace try to numb the pain of an early exit from this year’s World Cup through injury by playing poker with friends as reported by the Daily Mail.
